PlasmafaciallogoMany of you may have seen the ever-publicized Kim Kardashian receive a Plasma Facial. While she seemed very pleased with her results, we were shocked by the technique used by Kim K’s doctor.

The Plasma Facial uses a patient’s own plasma  to heal and correct skin issues such as scars, large pores, and rough texture. PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) is derived from a patient’s own blood, combined with a patented agent, and centrifuged down to separate plasma from red blood cells.

Plasma has a clear, yellowish appearance and is somewhat gel –like. This is why we were so surprised to see Kim K.’s doctor using her non-separated blood in the facial.

In a Plasma Facial, Dermanpen,  a micro needling pen (which has many very small needles) drives the plasma into the skin. The Dermapen treatment creates micro-pores into the dermis, stimulating collagen production, and PRP contains growth factors that nourish and heal the skin. Patients may experience some minor pin-point bleeding and redness after the treatment.  However, prolonged or heavy bleeding – such as Kim K. seems to imply that she had – is absolutely abnormal. The Plasma Facial is a procedure you can have and, depending on your own healing times and skin sensitivity, return to work on the same day.

Finally, in the televised clip of Kim K. receiving the treatment, she seems to be in quite a bit of pain. She should have been numbed before the procedure with a topical numbing cream that should help ease any discomfort. Additionally, the microneedles move at such a fast frequency that the treatment should feel more like a heavy microdermabrasion treatment than something painful.

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) has been used for decades in Orthopedics to help with post-surgical healing. We are excited for the new cosmetic applications of this proven technology. We just hope you won’t be scared away by the experiences of Kim K., and will come experience the correct way to receive a Plasma Facial!  If you’d like to learn more about the Plasma Facial, please email or call us today at 303.469.0064
